Hamilton has its own street of cafes and shops. What it sends us is the appointment that needs three hours, or one particular pair of hands.
Hamilton grew up around a coal shaft finished in 1849, known as the Borehole, and became a municipality in 1871. From 1947, families from Lettopalena in Italy settled in Islington and then Hamilton, and Beaumont Street became the centre of Newcastle's Italian community; the Kent Hotel has stood on it since 1924. Hamilton station sits on both the Hunter Line and the line to Sydney, so plenty of Hamilton hair spends the week on a train or at a desk, and gets booked around that.
Hamilton has a shopping street most suburbs would envy, and plenty of people never leave it for a trim. The Hamilton clients we see make the 2.7 km trip because they want a particular stylist, or a time slot their week actually allows.
Mostly that comes down to three things. Mika cuts curly hair dry, one curl at a time, and people with curls tend to travel for that. Lena does precision cuts and colour correction, the work people put off until they find someone they trust with it. And Thursday until 8pm catches anyone who works in the city or rides the train home through Hamilton station.
Root colour every five or six weeks is the steady booking, usually with a cut every second visit. The hair colour page explains how we match a root to the lengths so the line doesn't show as it grows. Precision cuts, bobs and curly cuts are on the women's haircut page, and the full price list sets out graduate, senior and director rates side by side.
New to colour here? The colour makers ask for a skin test at least 48 hours ahead. It takes five minutes, so drop in for it on a day you're passing The Junction anyway.
A colour with a cut can take three hours, so on a Thursday evening aim for a 5pm or 6pm start.
Further south? Try the Adamstown page, or see all the suburbs on our hair salon Newcastle page. When you know what you want, send a booking request and we'll confirm a time.

Yes. We're open until 8pm on Thursdays, so you can finish work, get off the train at Hamilton and still sit down for a cut or a root colour. Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday close at 5:30pm.
Mika, one of our senior stylists. She cuts curls dry so she can see where each one falls before she takes any length. It takes 75 minutes and costs $115 with her.
Root colour runs about 90 minutes: $95 graduate, $110 senior, $130 director. We set the price at the consultation, before a single bowl is mixed.
Tom, our graduate stylist, does men's cuts and fades. Half an hour with him is $45, or $55 and $65 if you'd rather a senior or director.
Lena, our director stylist, does colour correction at $150 an hour. She looks at the hair first, tells you how many sessions it's likely to take, and gives you the number before anything starts.

Tuesday to Saturday, late on Thursday. A consultation is free, and every price is set before anything is mixed.
