Women's haircut
Newcastle

A women's haircut at Marram Hair is a cut and blow-dry booked for a full hour, so there's time to talk before the scissors come out. We cut straight, wavy and curly hair in The Junction, Newcastle: curls are cut dry by Mika, bobs are Lena's, and Tom takes the men's cuts.

What a women's haircut at Marram includes

Every women's haircut here is a cut and blow-dry, booked for an hour. The first part of that hour is a conversation at the mirror, with your hair dry and as you usually wear it. We ask how long you spend on it in the morning, whether you tie it up for work or the gym, what your last cut did well and what it didn't. Then a wash, the cut, and a blow-dry that shows you how the shape is meant to sit.

It's $75 with a graduate stylist, $95 with a senior and $120 with a director, and it's a fixed price, not a from-price. Length doesn't change it.

If you want to change the shape completely, bring photos, and bring one of a cut you'd never want too. It tells us as much as the one you love. We'll tell you honestly whether your hair will do it: a fine, straight bob won't behave like the thick, wavy one in the picture, and you deserve to hear that before the first snip.

Curly hair cut, done dry

Mika, one of our senior stylists, cuts curly and wavy hair dry, curl by curl. Curls shrink as they dry, and they don't all shrink by the same amount. A curl that looks level when wet can spring up centimetres shorter than the one beside it. Cutting dry means Mika sees each curl in its real shape and cuts it where it sits.

A curly cut takes about seventy-five minutes. It's $95 with a graduate, $115 with a senior and $140 with a director, so $115 with Mika. Come with your hair dry and styled the way you normally wear it, with your usual products in. After the cut, Mika shows you how to apply product and dry it so it holds without frizz in Newcastle's summer humidity.

There's more on which shapes suit which curls, and why dry cutting matters, in our journal post on the best haircut for curly hair.

Bobs and precision cuts

A bob has nowhere to hide. One edge sits right at the jaw or the collarbone, and a few millimetres either way is the difference between sharp and almost. Lena, our director stylist, does most of our precision cutting: blunt bobs, graduated bobs, longer lobs and the short shapes that need the same accuracy.

With Lena, a cut and blow-dry is $120. Bobs lose their line faster than any other cut, so most of her bob clients rebook every five to six weeks. If you're growing a bob out, tell her: there's a way to shape each stage so the in-between months don't look like waiting.

Men's haircuts with Tom

Tom is our graduate stylist and takes most of the men's cuts, from skin fades to a longer scissor cut. A men's cut with Tom is $45 and takes about thirty minutes. With a senior stylist it's $55, and with a director $65. Fades are the shape that grows out quickest, so for a sharp finish book every three to four weeks; a scissor cut usually lasts five to six.

How often should you get a haircut?

It depends far more on the shape than on hair type, so here's the rough guide we give at the mirror:

  • Short cuts, pixies and bobs: every four to six weeks, because the line is the whole style.
  • Mid-length and layered cuts: every six to eight weeks.
  • Long hair you're growing: a trim every eight to twelve weeks, just enough to stop split ends travelling up.
  • Curly hair: around every three months, sometimes longer, because growth barely shows in a curl.
  • Fades and short men's cuts: every three to four weeks.

If your colour is on a cycle, book the cut with it, so it all happens in one visit.

A blow-dry on its own

A blow-dry with no cut starts at $55 with a graduate, $65 with a senior and $75 with a director, about forty-five minutes. Long or very thick hair takes longer, which is why it's a from-price. Clients book it before weddings, work events and long weekends, and on Thursdays we stay open until 8pm, which suits an after-work booking.

Cuts: your questions

How much is a women's haircut in Newcastle?

At Marram Hair a women's cut and blow-dry is $75 with a graduate stylist, $95 with a senior and $120 with a director. It's a fixed price and it includes the wash, the cut and the blow-dry. A curly cut, done dry, is $95, $115 or $140 by the same levels.

How often should you get a haircut?

It depends on the shape. Short cuts and bobs lose their line in about four to six weeks. Mid-length layers hold for six to eight. Long hair you're growing can go eight to twelve weeks with a trim to keep the ends healthy. Curly hair often goes longest, around three months, because a few millimetres of growth barely shows in a curl.

Why do you cut curly hair dry?

Curls shrink as they dry, and each one shrinks by a different amount. Cut wet, a curl that looked level can spring up centimetres shorter than its neighbour. Cut dry, Mika can see where every curl sits in its natural shape and cut it there, so what you see in the mirror is what you'll get at home.

How should I come to a curly haircut?

Come with your hair dry and worn the way you normally wear it, with your usual products, washed a day or two before. Skip the tight ponytail and the straightener that morning. Mika needs to see your curl pattern as it really is, and how it falls when you've styled it yourself.

Do you do men's haircuts?

Yes. Tom, our graduate stylist, takes most of our men's cuts, including fades and scissor cuts. A men's cut with Tom is $45 and takes about thirty minutes; with a senior it's $55 and with a director $65. Fades look sharpest when they're tidied every three to four weeks.

Can I get a haircut and colour on the same day?

Yes, and plenty of clients do. We colour first and cut after, so the cut is shaped on the final colour and any dry ends come off at the end. Tell us when you book so we hold enough time, and if you're new to colour with us, we'll book a five-minute skin test at least 48 hours before.
