The Hill sits immediately south of Newcastle's city centre, 2.4 km by road from Kenrick Street and about four minutes in the car. For a hairdresser The Hill can get to after work, we stay open until 8pm every Thursday.

Kenrick Street, The Junction4 minutes from The Hill by car

One of Newcastle's earliest settled areas is four minutes away, and Thursday stays open late for the city next door.

The Hill was first called Church Hill, then Prospect Hill, and it holds Newcastle's first town plan, laid out by Henry Dangar in 1823. Christ Church Cathedral stands on Church Street, the streets are lined with Victorian terraces, and King Edward Park, home of the Bogey Hole, is close by. With the CBD right beside it, bookings from The Hill tend to land early, late or on a Saturday, and they lean towards cuts that keep their shape through a working week.

Thursday evenings after the CBD
The Hill backs onto the city centre, so office workers book our 8pm Thursday finish for a cut or roots on the way home.
A Saturday blow-dry before King Edward Park
An 8am Saturday blow-dry is finished by nine, in time for a walk through King Edward Park or a swim at the Bogey Hole.
Men's cuts on the way home from town
Tom's men's cuts take 30 minutes and cost $45, short enough to fit between leaving the office and getting home to the terraces.

Hairdresser The Hill can fit around a work day

The Hill sits immediately south of Newcastle's business district. Being beside the city centre means a hairdresser The Hill relies on has to keep hours that suit a working day, which is why we're open until 8pm on Thursdays and from 8am on Saturdays.

It is one of the earliest settled parts of Newcastle, laid out in Henry Dangar's 1823 town plan, with Christ Church Cathedral on Church Street and King Edward Park nearby. From The Hill we mostly book weeknight cuts, quick men's cuts and early Saturday blow-dries.

What clients from The Hill book

Precision cuts lead. Lena, our director stylist, cuts lines that hold between visits, and a women's haircut with a blow-dry runs an hour, priced at $75, $95 or $120 as you go from graduate to senior to director. Mika shapes curls while they're dry, which suits anyone who air-dries.

Hair colour starts with a consultation, and every price by level is on services and prices.

Questions from The Hill

Which hairdresser near The Hill is open late?

Marram Hair stays open until 8pm on Thursdays, roughly four minutes' drive from The Hill.

Can I book a haircut after work in the city?

Yes, Thursdays until 8pm. Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday finish at 5:30pm, so ask for a Thursday a week or so ahead.

How much is a men's cut?

A men's cut takes 30 minutes: $45 with Tom, our graduate stylist, $55 with a senior or $65 with a director. Tom also does fades and short back and sides.

How often should you tone blonde hair?

Most blonde needs a toner every six to eight weeks to hold its shade. A toner or gloss is a 30-minute appointment, $55 to $70 by level, short enough for a long lunch.

What happens at a first appointment?

Every first visit starts with a consultation on what you want and what it costs, settled before we start. If colour is new to you here, we also do a short skin test no less than two days before.

What's your cancellation policy?

Tell us 24 hours or more ahead and there's no charge. Inside 24 hours it's half the booked service, though we'll always talk to you before charging, since city work days change at short notice.
